Barbecue

Barbecues are not permitted on the museum premises.

Barrier-free access

We strive to make the museum accessible to visitors with disabilities to the maximum extent possible. Upon request an electro-scooter is available at the main entrance ticket desk free of charge. Restrooms designed to fit the needs of the disabled are located in the entrance building as well as in the lavatory building next to the museum restaurant. The last wagon of each train offers barrier-free access.

Bicycle

Cycling is not permitted within the grounds of the museum.

Buildings for rent

Some of the Open- Air Museum buildings may be rented for private or business parties. Please go to Rental for comprehensive information.

Bus parking lot

Free parking is offered next to the Salzburg Open-Air Museum. In 2012 the parking lot was enlarged by 100 spaces for cars and 5 bus parking spots. Parking lot no. 2 is opened if needed and has 110 additional parking spaces available. In case of major events a neighboring meadow is being rented to provide additional parking options. 

Credit card

The museum ticket office is located in the entrance building and is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Payment is accepted in cash, debit or credit card.

Diaper-changing table

The restroom of the Bundwerkstadel (Bundwerk Stable) in the Flachgau area, as well as the restrooms in the entrance hall and near the restaurant offer diaper-changing tables.

Duration of stay

The scenic and diverse grounds of the open-air museum cover a surface of 50 ha. A network of trails with a total length of 7 km connects more than 100 buildings. In order to be able to visit at least part of the exhibits, visitors are advised to plan a minimum stay of two hours. It is possible to leave the premises of the museum after 6:00 p.m. by using the revolving gate.

Debit card payment

The ticket desk of the museum is located in the entrance hall and is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Payment is accepted in cash, via debit or credit card.

Dogs

Dogs are permitted on the grounds. However, leashes are compulsory, and while riding on the heritage railway a muzzle is mandatory.

Group travel

Groups of visitors are most welcome at the Open-Air Museum. We offer visits to the museum with or without a guided tour. In order to ensure availability, guided tours require a reservation at least one week in advance. For group visits without a guided tour a reservation is not required, but your registration is much appreciated. Go to Groups/guided tours for more information.

Handcart

Handcarts are great for families visiting with kids. They offer the ideal solution for transporting bags, rucksacks, picnic baskets as well as toddlers across the vast grounds of the museum. The handcart rental (fees apply) is to be found right at the museum shop in the entrance hall.

Heritage railway

The heritage railway passes through the entire grounds of the open-air museum on a track of 1.7 km length. Daily operating hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. continuously. The ride is included in the entrance fee. On workdays at least one train with three wagons with a capacity of 69 people runs, while on Sundays and holidays usually two train are operated. A ride starting from the “Flachgau” station located close to the entrance area, past the middle station “Tennengau” to the final destination “Pongau” and back takes approximately 30 minutes.

Museum area / extension

Natural environment and scenic diversity – those are the keywords characterizing the grounds of the Open-Air Museum, which is rated as a botanical as well as a nature reserve. The total area comprises 50 hectares.

Museum shop

The museum shop in the entrance hall offers small and larger souvenirs, most of which are unique handcrafted articles. The heritage grocery store offers another chance to buy unique local products and gifts.

Photographs

Taking pictures is permitted all over the museum grounds for private use. Photography for business purposes requires a fee and needs to be authorized by the museum management.

Public transport and post bus

The Salzburg Open-Air Museum is reachable via Salzburg (main station) and Bad Reichenhall (main station) by taking Post bus No. 180 (Mon. – Fri. hourly, Sat. and Sun. every two hours). The museum has its own stop (called “Großgmain Freilichtmuseum”). The trip from Salzburg takes 35 minutes, from Bad Reichenhall 18 minutes.

Rest areas and picnic areas

Rest areas with tables and benches have been established all over the grounds of the Open-Air Museum, inviting guests to take a break or to eat snacks they may have brought along. Picnicking is permitted in the mown meadows. On bad weather days the upper floor of the Salinenstadel (Saline Stable) in the Flachgau area serves as a picnic area.

Restaurant

Treat yourself to some delicious regional dishes served by the chef of the museum`s restaurant, Rudi Wohland and his team. The opening hours of the “Salettl” coincide with those of the museum. This location offers 150 indoor seats (at the “Salettl” and the historic gazebo) as well as an additional 250 seats at the charming outdoor area. Restroom

The museum grounds include four restrooms. There is another facility in the restaurant. Restrooms designed to fit the needs of the disabled are located in the entrance building as well as in the lavatory building next to the museum restaurant.

Smoking

Smoking is absolutely prohibited inside the museum buildings. Ashtrays have been placed near the rest areas. The outside area of the museum restaurant offers another option for smoking.
