Collection depository

Collection depository

The Salzburg Open-Air Museum collects items that pertain to the heritage of rural farming culture and daily life from the beginning of 18th century to the 1970’s. Whereas the houses document the historical building development over a period of six centuries, the furnishing of the houses, stables and farm buildings serves the holistic representation of rural living environments. The inventory kept at the museum depository is used for that purpose. But currently, the furnishings kept in the actual houses make up only about 1/3 of the complete collection owned by the museum. An air-conditioned depository, four flying roofs as well as additional storage areas serve as the ideal repository for a total of approximately 60,000 objects, treasured with respect to their characteristics and condition. All the objects added to the collection have been precisely recorded, described, measured and photographed. Every single object has been stored in a database and can be effortlessly tracked applying various search criteria. The more exact and detailed the documentation of an object, the higher its cultural and historic value may be rated.

Documentation and research

Apart from being a much appreciated destination for outings, the Salzburg Open-Air Museum has been developing into a competence centre for research in the field of rural housing as well as ancient construction and labor technologies. We fulfill the mission of passing on the awareness about our significant cultural heritage in a practical as well as figurative sense. Various scientific research measures are taken in cooperation with universities and other institutions. International positioning is assured by constant contact and exchange with other open-air museums as well as participation in symposia. Relevant topics dealing with the rural cultural history of Salzburg are published in the series “publications of the Salzburg Open-Air Museum”. A specialized library shelving approx. 9,000 volumes and the photographic archive of more than 25,000 images documenting rural daily life both add to the expertise of the museum.
